Grammar Units: Flipped and Fun
We cover 4 units of basic grammar, asking that you know, be able to identify, and use correctly: parts of speech, parts of the sentence, phrases, and clauses. Exciting stuff, I know! So we're going to try to have some fun along this journey.... This is a "flipped" unit, which is when the students go home and view (and take notes on) the lecture, and then practice the skill in the classroom. Here's our Grammar Extravaganza: Instructions: At Home: 1. Watch the assigned video/song/multi-media presentation at least 2 times. The first time, you can just watch it and enjoy. The second time around, take some notes on this form (GoogleDoc) or this form (WordDoc). (or use this PDF) 2. The notes ask that you summarize the pieces of the video in 2 or 3 sentences, including definitions or what process to follow. Be sure to note and use any specific vocabulary used in the video. 3. Formulate a question. Try to ask a question that can't be answered yes/no. You can come up with a quiz question, or a clarification question, or an example. In Class: 1. Submit your note form for credit. 2. We'll do an in-class activity that let's you practice, create examples, play. Other Notes: Students are also provided a textbook with exercises and practice tests. I have practice worksheets available upon request. Want to quiz yourself? I recommend using these online exercises to practice, since you can quiz yourself and submit your answers to get a score immediately. There are lots of others out there as well.
